Year Of Development In Lyttelton Area

The year 1966 has been one r/ change and development throughout the borough, according to the Lyttelton Borough Council’s latest newsletter. One prominent feature has been the National Roads Board's approval and subsidygrant for the first stage of reconstruction and widening of Norwich quay. Some engineering details have to be completed before tenders can be called.

Work on the first stage of reconstruction of the Diamond Harbour main highway will start early next year. The »jccessful tenderer is British Pavements Ltd. The highway’s overall width, including a footpath to be constructed by the council, will be 33 feet. To avoid further disturbance of the reconstructed road, sewer laterals will be installed simultaneously on properties along the route.

A new toilet block has been erected at Corsair Bay and constant efforts are being made to increase the areas of borough reserves and playing areas for residents and visitors. A new all-weather cricket pitch has been completed on the Lyttelton Recreation Ground.

At Diamond Harbour the playing ground is being increased in size by landscaping and filling and the Diamond Harbour Burgess’s Association is installing playing equipment on the domain.

An additional well has been completed to augment Lyttelton’s water supply and work has begun on'the new reservoir at West Lyttelton’s Cressy terrace. The Lyttelton Borough Council has

jcrined other local authorities in the Christchurch metropoli tan areas in forming a Regional Underground Water Authority. Because considerable difficulty has been experienced in obtaining qualified staff for the electrical department, an electrician has been obtained m the United Kingdom. He will probably start work later this month. The Electricity Department has notified the council of the new bulk tariff charges to distributing authorities, to apply from the beginning of next April. These are now being considered together with next year’s change to decimal currency. The main sub--1 station will be extended to , house additional 11,000-volt switch gear and new sub- • stations will be erected in Ripon street and Ticehurst terrace.
