Local Trainers ’ Strong Hands In Double

The Riccarton trainers, G. S. Barr and J. C. Tomkinson, have form runners for major races and the T.A.B. double at the Hororata Racing Club’s meeting on Saturday.

Seminole, a laststart fourth in the New Zealand Cup, will have her next start for G. S. Barr’s stable in the Gordons Gin Handicap, and her stablemates, Kalimera and Danny Kaye, will be fit sprinters for the H. A. Knight Memorial.

Pbarasal and Shipmate form an attractive bracket from the Tomkinson stable in the Knight Memorial, and Standout, which carries his trainer’s colours, could be an improving light-weight in the Gordons Gin Handicap. Hushaway will be another runner for the Tomkinson stable in the Gordons Gin Handicap. Pbarasal and Kalimera both made impressions in brilliant training sprints at Riccarton yesterday .

Kalimera (B. Edens) led Danny Kaye (D. N. Hadfield) by a neck after dashing over half a mile on the trial grass in 48 2-ssec, the last three furlongs in 35 3-ssec.

Edens will ride Kalimera In the Knight Memorial, and Hadfield will be Danny Kaye’s race rider.

STRONG FINISH Pharasal (A. J. Stokes) was going keenly alongside his stablemate Court (B. Collins) ending half a mile on the plough in 49 2-ssec. They Increased speed for the final three furlongs to an impressive 35sec. A. J. Stokes, the stable horseman, will ride Pharasal on Saturday, and the apprentice, R. K. Moir, has been engaged for Shipmate. Moir was Shipmate’s rider for an easy five furlongs yesterday. He eased to finish in Imm 6 3-ssec after running the opening furlong in 13sec and the first two in 26sec.

J. L. Barr’s pair, General Gilbert (J. Kerkvliet) and Early Dawn (D. N. Hadfield) were two of the more impressive of those tried over a bit of ground.

• General Gilbert picked up a little ground near the post to finish a mile on the plough on terms with Early Dawn in Imin 43 2-ssec. They stepped up the pace attractively to run the last half-mile in 50 l-ssec.

No riders had been announced yesterday for General Gilbert and Early Dawn, but D. N. Hadfield will have the mount on one of them. E. G. Low will ride their stablemate. Sabell, which galloped a mile on the plough with Caprino in. Imin 45 3-5 sec, the last half-mile in 50 2-5 sec, and the final three furlongs in 37 4-ssec.

BRISK OPENING

Coseta (Low) and Gold Shower (F. H. Skelton) ran their mile in Imin 45 2-ssec, the first half briskly in 51 4-5 sec.

Golden Vanity (A. Swanson) recorded Imin 45sec, the last half strongly in 50 4-5 sec. A race against the sprinters at the Greymouth meeting should have been valuable in sharpening her for the main race at Hororata. Easily the fastest for seven furlongs were Millie Small and Hamadan. They finished in 1.29 2-ssec after reeling off

the opening half mile in 50 2-ssec. In shorter sprints none impressed more than Sir Limond, which picked up a length and a half to finish alongside Skeeky Fox after running three furlongs on the plough in 35 3-ssec.
