N.Z. Wheat “Comparable To Australian”

“In the long term view and ignoring seasonal fluctuations New Zealand wheat is pretty comparable to Australian wheat” the director of the Wheat Research Institute (Mr R. L. Cawley) said at yesterday’s meeting of the Wheat Research Institute.

Mr Cawley said the average over-all baking scores for New Zealand wheat for the 1966season had been 34.7 while the average over-all of Australian wheat imported had been 35. The senior cereal breeder of the Crop Research Division of D.S.I.R. (Mr L. G. L. Copp) said that it had also to be remembered that Australian yields were about 20 to 25 bushels to the acre while in New Zealand the yield was about 50 bushels.

The general manager of the Wheat Board (Mr L. Dunshea) said that 6.2 million bushels of Australian wheat had been imported in the 1965

year and less in the 1966 year. The imports had been for all purposes and had all gone into the North Island.
