WORK SHORT AT WGTN.

(N.Z. Press Association)

WELLINGTON, Dec. 6.

“Large-scale unemployment continues on the Wellington waterfront in what appears to be the largest recession in the port since the end of the war,” said an executive member of the Wellington Amalgamated Waterside Workers’ Union (Mr E. G. Thompson) today.

Mr Thompson said that yesterday 400 men were not given work and this morning's total was 276.

“Considerable apprehension is felt by waterside workers at the situation which is developing,” he said.

Repeated requests by the union to the port employers to suspend the recruiting of new men into the industry have been refused. The employers are taking refuge in the provisions of the Waterfront Industry Act, which gives the sole right for the recruitment of labour to them."
