Wage Order

Sir, —The 2J per cent wage increase was stated in your paper to be on wages, bonus payments, and all earnings. Unfortunately, there seems to be some misunderstanding on the statement by employers who are not increasing the bonus payments by the 2 J per cent rise. As employees of these firms we would appreciate a further statement to clarify the situation.—Yours etc. G.L.W. December 1,1966. [Mr C. D. Macan, district superintendent of the Department of Labour, replies: “The general order dated November 10, 1966, increases all rates of remuneration determined by awards and industrial agreements by an amount equal to 2) per cent. ‘Remuneration* means salary or wages and includes bonuses and other special payments which are specifically provided for in awards and industrial agreements. Bonus payments which are paid by agreement between an employer and his employees but which are not specified in an award or industrial agreement are not subject to the general order. Such bonus payments are not rates of remuneration determined by an award. The courts since 1952 have given a number of decisions supporting this view.”]
