Aotea Main Crop

Aotea was still the main wheat for milling in the 1966 season, Hilgendorf had moved into second place. Arawa was third and the other varieties did not amount to much of the total, the senior cereal breeder of the Crop Research Division of the D.S.I.R. (Mr L. G. L. Copp) reported to members of the Wheat Research Committee at a meeting yesterday. Mr Copp gave the following percentages of the total 1966 production of wheat varieties, which excluded sales for seed, feed and shipments to the North Island, 1961 figures in parentheses): Aotea, 43.74 (86); Hilgendorf, 33.39 (.97): Arawa, 17.87 (11); Cross Seven, 2.47 (.70). Mr Cropp said the Wheat Board had bought 2,200,000 bushels of Hilgendorf and Hilgendorf was now being grown in seven wheat districts in New Zealand. In another discussion Sir Walter Mulholland said that varietal averages of baking scores of wheats in the 1966 harvest showed that Hilgendorf 61 could be depended on to give a desirable boost to the flour quality.
