WILD DOG PACKS
Hunters On Watch "The Press" Special Service WELLINGTON, Dec. 5. Packs of wild dogs were roaming the headwaters of the Waiau river on the southern fringe of the Urewera National Park, reported the Conservator of Forests at Rotorua (Mr D. Kennedy) to the Urewera National Park Board. Mr Kennedy said private hunters had seen two packs of wild dogs between the Te Waiotukapiti and Central Waiau huts. About 14 dogs were seen. One was shot. Forestry hunters had observed dog tracks in the area on a recent survey.
The hunters would again be working in the area during the summer. If dogs were seen again an effort would be made to poison them. Other board members said there had been claims that wild dogs had roamed in packs in the area as long as 40 years ago.
