RACING Cabriere Could Win Wattie’s Gold Cup

“The Press” Special Service PALMERSTON NORTH. Cabriere could return to winning form tomorrow in the £l4OO Wattie’s Gold Cup, the first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Wanganui Jockey Club’s meeting.

Cabriere, which has yet to win this season, has drifted to a luxurious mark in the weights for a horse with his record. He will carry 7-7.

L. K. Tinsley will ride Cabriere from No. 1 at the start. Tinsley rode Simonsen, which failed badly in a similar event at Woodville on Saturday. Cabriere could make amends for his younger stablemate’s poor performance.

Sherlocks looks the main danger to Cabriere, especially because it has been announced that the Woodville

second day winner Tarim will not start. There is also a doubt concerning Baloo. Sherlocks has improved since his impressive win at Woodville on Wednesday. He pleased in training yesterday. A good win tomorrow would boost Sherlock’s’ holiday prospects. It could even mean a start in the Auckland Cup. Lei and My Call are certain to be in favour. Lei won well on the first day at Feilding then failed disappointingly in her next start. My Call won at Feilding over a sprint distance in his

prospects although Surf Boy did not impress at Woodville on Saturday. He looked slightly tender in his preliminary. Reports from Hawera before the race suggested that Surf Boy could have needed the race. first start for the season. He has done well since. Mukupai and Surf Boy are

Mukupai has not raced | since Riccarton when he ran: two good races in weight-for-age events. He finished close! up in both the ' Canterbury Cup and the Churchill Stakes. Mukupai’s efforts were encouraging signs that he could now manage a mile and a quarter under handicap conditions. He has yet to win beyond a mile. Mukupai has freshened since his southern trip. Tolka has not appeared since her close and unlucky second to Lei on the first day at Wanganui. She is an unpredictable mare but on her day is very hard to beat.

The Woodville sprint winners, Classical Glow and Jetmate, might dominate the betting in the Bristol Thousand. second leg of the main double. Classical Glow won impressively last Wednesday and Jetmate was an attractive winner in the McWilliams’ Wines Handicap on Saturday. Classical Glow, which is selected to win, finished strongly to beat Backfire in the Oete Handicap last week. In her previous start she looked unlucky at Feilding. Jetmate will be able to race handy and this could give him an advantage over Classical Glow. He won narrowly but well on Saturday. W. D. Skelton was pleased with his performance. Awaroa is another last-start winner with a strong chance. She finished third at Feilding then ran on strongly for an easy win over six furlongs at Levin. Tipperary Tom and Corina look the best of the lightweights. Tipperary Tom was just beaten at Levin. He then finished fourth on the first day at Woodville after getting his tongue over the bit. His failure to nin on in the straight was therefore not so surprising.
