“Rescue” Charts
(.X'rw Zealand Press Association•
WELLINGTON, Dec. 5. Two charts of New Zealand waters to assist search and rescue operations will be on sale to yachtsmen this week. The charts, prepared by the Royal New Zealand Navy Hydrographic Branch in co-operation with the Search and Rescue Organisation, will standardise a method for reporting a distressed yacht’s position.
The charts, though similar to those already on sale, have been overlaid with patterns of 50-
mile and five-mile squares. They will be used by all rescue services to determine the position of distressed yachts and coordinate rescue operations.
A yachtsman in difficulty can indicate his position by referring to the chart and search and rescue craft need only search a small area of probability without covering the same area twice.
The first two charts cover the Hauraki Gulf and the approaches to Cook Strait.
