Obituary
MR J. CHAPMAN The former manager of a large dairying company in Fiji, Mr John Chapman, died ir Christchurch recently. He was 76. Mr Chapman was a grandson of the late Robert Chapman, who, as owner of the then 23,000-acre Springbank estate at Cust, was one of the most successful pioneer sheepbreeders in Canterbury. After farming in Canterbury, Mr John Chapman went to Fiji, and in 1928 joined the Fiji Pastoral Company, at Navua, later becoming manager. The company’s was the major industry in the area, and its dairy farm was often claimed to be the largest in the world. He married Brita, a daughter of the late Sir Maynard Hedstrom. Their house became Navua’s social centre, and during the war they provided hospitality for [many New Zealand servicemen. On retiring in 1945, Mr Chapman lived in Henderson for a short time before returning to Christchurch. Mr Chapman is survived by his wife and three daughters.
