BURNING OF SCRUB
Notice Wanted By Department The Electricity Department has urged farmers to exercise all reasonable care when burning off scrub this summer. The department asks farmers to advise 24 hours before they intend to burn off so arrangements for assistance can be made. The district engineer (Mr R. S. S. Meredith) said that consumers could suffer grave inconvenience if power lines were affected by burning off. He said the hot gases caused by such fires created excellent conductors which could cause the power to flash from one line to others, thus short-circuiting them. “Flash-overs usually cause hundreds of pounds worth of damage,” he said.
Mr Meredith said that where possible the department could deaden the lines while burning off was in progress to eliminate the flashover problem. This could not be done when alternative power routes were unavailable, he said. The department would pay for telephone calls from farmers who rang to advise of burning off.
