Students Await Exam. Results
An excited, jostling, cheering crowd of about 150 students greeted the appearance of the first
edition of “The Press,” containing the results of the University examinations, at “The Press” office this morning. Staff selling newspapers were mobbed, and the tables they had put out as crowd barriers were pushed forward a considerable distance, bringing other work almost to a standstill. The first students arrived just before 11 p.m., an hour and a half before the first edition of the newspaper appeared. At that time, about 10 students were waiting in front of “The Press”
building. Some girls with blankets and transistor radios had bedded down on the footpath.
By midnight, about 50 had gathered in the corner of Cathedral square outside “The Press” and Warners Hotel They were subdued as publication time approached. When the first newspapers appeared, a fullthroated cheer went up, and shouting and delighted squealing continued for about 20 minutes. About 50 cars were parked outside the building at 12.30 a.m., and cars and students continued to arrive . for some time.
