He made the promise in a letter congratulating U Thant on his re-election on Friday to a new five-year term and thanking him for agreeing to continue in office. The President did not mention any specific problems, but U Thant has made dear that the war in Vietnam is the one uppermost in his mind. In accepting re-election from the General Assembly, U Thant said the war must be ended and he would keep making every effort to promote a peaceful, just solution. The United States has not reacted to U Thant’s suggestion in his acceptance speech that the holiday truces planned in Vietnam should be. come a longer cessation of firing to create an atmosphere for peace talks.
