5. Regular bathing is a training in adaptation to heat and cold and hardens the body. Sauna is now widely used by athletes and sportsmen; is installed at Olympic and British Empire Games and is compulsory for the Finnish Army. 6. Weight Reduction —The benefit to be gained will depend very largely on the user. In the first place a person who is not overweight is unlikely to lose weight; in fact the opposite could apply due to improved appetite. Where a person is considerably overweight there is evidence that Sauna does assist in reducing, but regular use is essential—three times a •week or even daily. Jockeys commonly use this method. The loss of weight through perspiration is not all replaced by drinking afterwards—a person allowed to drink ad lib. will generally drink only about two thirds of the amount of water lost. Some dietary control is obviously desirable and a person who uses a Sauna is more likely to be conscious of this fact. 7. Perhaps the most widespread application for Sauna is the relief of the tensions of modern living. How do you feel in this world of sustained tension—business pressures, domestic problems, over-fatigue? The price is often insomnia, nervous disorders, ulcers. WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF SAUNA BATHING? The Food & Drug Administration in U.S.A, requires a warning that anyone with high blood pressure or heart trouble should see a doctor before using a Sauna. There are over 500,000 Sauna baths in Finland; virtually all Finns use them and have been doing so for over 1000 years. The idea is well tested. It is suggested, however, that elderly persons or those requiring nursing or medical care should consult their doctor in the use of the Sauna. WHAT DO USERS THINK OF THE SAUNA? The answer to this question must surely lie in the fact that after only three years some 30,000 New Zealanders now use Saunas. Frequency of use is largely a matter for the individual. The Finns make it a weekly ritual. Where the purpose is relief of pain several times a week would be more beneficial, at least until there is a marked improvement in the condition. If you want to find out more about Sauna, ask anyone who has one.
