Trawler Launched
A large wooden-hulled trawler which took four years to build at a private home on the top of Huntsbury hill, was launched at Lyttelton on Friday afternoon by the floating crane Rapaki. She is the Gannet, which after some fitting out, will engage in stern trawling from Akaroa. She is owned by Messrs A. G. F. Hern and B. G. Masson.
The Gannet is designed for an eight-knot cruising speed and is powered by a single diesel engine of 110 h.p. The owners were assisted with the building at Mr Hern’s residence by Mr F. Brown. Her dimensions are length 41ft 6in, beam 12ft, draft sft fiin. Built to Marine Department specifications, she has underwater planking of Australian hardwood and her upper hull is of treated white pine. Her plywood bulwarks are an unusual feature. She
has accommodation for three persons and is equipped with an automatic pilot, echo sounder and radio-telephone. Refrigerated space for three tons is provided. She has a 400-gallon fuel capacity and a 100-gallon fresh-water capacity. The Gannet will remain in Lyttelton while a mast is stepped and other details are attended to. The Gannet is expected to be ready for service before the end of the year.
