Course Double Pays £184

Ingleburn and Winfield Chief, both trained in the Methven district, won the oncourse double at Addington Raceway on Saturday. The dividend for £1 was £lB4 8s 6d. Ingleburn was fairly well supported, but Winfield Chief was at odds of more than 21 to 1 on the win totalisator. Ingleburn had a decisive win in the first leg, the Welcome Stakes, but Winfield Chief had only a nose to spare in a spectacular finish to the Raceway Handicap, less than a length separating the first five to finish.

Inglebrun was towards the tail of the field in twelfth place at the half-mile and she looked to be struggling to keep up with two furlongs left. However, once into the straight she came with a determined run to win by a length from Bramlock, another runner awkwardly placed well back in the field until late. Bramlock beat Moneywise, which had every chance, by half a head for second, with a short length to Overtime. Intercede was next, just ahead of Blue Pin, which shied at a patch on the track at the straight entrance. The favourite, Newport Maid, was badly checked at the straight entrance and

finished near the tail of the field. Inquisitive Lad broke at the start. Back To Tenth Winfield Chief was handy early in the Raceway Handicap, but he was pushed back a little to be tenth at the half-mile when the field bunched. Friendly Tom and Courtier improved sharply after six furlongs, Friendly Tom taking the lead with more than a mile left. He was inclined to run out each time he passed the furlong post, but maintained an advantage until the straight entrance. Courtier looked likely to win inside the furlong, but challenges came thick and fast. Winfield Chief came home with a strong run through the middle of the field and won by a nose from Loyal Light, which received a poor run and did well to finish so close. Courtier was a nose back third, a neck in front of Student, with half a length to Bill Adoinis, which received the run of the race but could not take full advantage of an opening along the inside.

Soldier Gal, Julie Hanover

and Moutere Bay headed the others, but they were beaten off. Friendly Tom, Ulove, Loyal Light, Doug’s Choice and La Garrison gave ground at the start. Overdue Win Kimberley Kid, a small colt by Goodland from the Garrison Hanover mare, Heathmount, gained a deserved win in the Juvenile Stakes. M. Holmes had him prominently placed all the way, and he fought on for a narrow but decisive win over Dark Sun, which was late working clear from the trailing position behind Authetic. Authentic tired to a close third, ahead of Battle Star and Talisman, with Mokoreta and Johnny Kawa next. Vip, Authentic and Mokoreta were a shade slow early. Warily, driven by D. G. Gibbons, came out on top in the Members’ Handicap, a race for probationary drivers. Warily led early and then trailed Montage over the last nine furlongs. Warily challenged strongly inside the furlong and came on to win by a neck from a strong finisher, Fireaway, one of the more patiently driven runners. Montage tired a shade to a close third, ahead of Hal Air, with Carefree beaten off next.
