29 At 'Party' Fined

(A’.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. Dec. 4. Twenty-two of 30 persons convicted on Friday for being on premises used illegally for the consumption of liquor, had a total of 380 previous convictions listed against them. The convictions on Friday were the result of a police raid on a house in Ponsonby, on September 22, which revealed 77 dozen empty beer bottles, 37 dozen full bottles, and six bottles of spirits, in a house where the third “party” in three nights was in progress.

“This was not only a resort for the consumption of liquor, but it was also for the criminal elements in the city,” said Mr L. G. H. Sinclair, S.M. “It is a very unhealthy element.” The Magistrate dismissed a charge of being in a common gaming house made against all those arrested, saying it was difficult to judge who was there for the purpose of gaming. Fifteen people were fined £lO each, with £1 10s costs, 14 were fined £5, With £1 10s costs. Another man was convicted and discharged.
