Holland Gains Third Moth Class Title
A. M. Holland, the noted Waitnakariri and Stewarts Gully yachtsman, added further laurels to an already illustrious racing career by winning the third South Island Australian Sloth class championship at Timaru at the week-end. Already the winner of two South Island Mark II Moth class
titles and twice Leander R Class champion with G. S. Mander. Holland outclassed a high-class fleet in his new Mander-design-ed Moth, Niggle. The series was a triumph for the Waimakariri Club yachtsmen who dominated the racing and took the first five places over-all.
Saturday’s two races were sailed in very light conditions with a moderate roll and a slightly confused sea which upset many of the competitors. It was in this race that Holland won by four minutes—a huge margin for a monotype class. The best racing was in the last race on Sunday afternoon, sailed in a steady easterly which provided a good hiking breeze. The first six boats finished within one and three-quar-ter minutes of the leader. Holland’s boat has a semistayed rig and is more easily adjustable than the other unstayed ones and this may have counted for part of his success. But over-all he was a deserving winner.
