SATURDAY BREAD Mr Shand “Unable To Enter Dispute”
, f.Veic Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, December 2. The Minister of Labour (Mr Shand) will not intervene in the dispute between Auckland master bakers and the union over the baking of week-end bread.
In a telegram to the secretary of the Auckland Housewives’ Association, Mrs U. Shanks, today, Mr Shand said he had no jurisdiction and legally could not intervene.
The Housewives’ Association sent a telegram to Mr Shand protesting at the “highhanded" way in which the Bakers’ Union had prevented bakers from providing fresh bread on Saturdays.
Mrs Shanks said her organisation had asked the Minister to intervene because it was a “shocking thing” for anyone to stand in the bakers’ way when they were willing to provide fresher bread. Master bakers in Auckland and surrounding districts this week decided not to bake bread after 9 a.m. on Fridays, in the face of a union decision to implement a policy of no work on Fridays.
