Week-end Sport In Marlborough
United had a nine-wicket win over Old Boys at Blenheim on Saturday. In Old Boys’ second innings, T. Harnett (48) and T. Maffey (38) had a good partnership which at one stage put Old Boys back in the game. J. Neal, one of the Marlborough opening batsmen, was in good bowling form for United, with his medium-pace in-swingers He took eight for 52 in the two innings. United, last season’s competition winner, is in fine form, the fielding is first-class, and It will be a hard side to beat this season. M. Williams scored 150 for United in a second-grade match against Tua Marina at Horton Park. Athletics The Canterbury under-age athletics team beat Marlborough by 22 points at Blenheim. Sixty athletes from eight to 14 years of age travelled north to compete in the inter-provincial meeting. Many under-age records were broken, but officials were doubtful that all would be recognised because of considerable wind assistance. A meritorious feat was performed by nine-year-old William McLellan, of Marlborough, who long-jumped 13ft 10 fin without this assistance. Archery.—Senior Men—York round: P. Alloway 1, T. Monk 2, B.
