MARATHON PLANS
Baillie To Try For Mexico (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. W. D. Baillie said that he would try for Olympic representation in 1968 as a marathon runner after his win in the Owairaka marathon on Saturday. “I believe a marathon runner will not be affected by Mexico City’s altitude to the same extent as a 5000 or 10,000-metre runner, and that is why I intend to concentrate on that event in 1968," he said.
Baillie ran a sterling race to win the Owairaka marathon and showed no signs of the Achilles tendon injury which ruined his chances of.success in this year’s Commonwealth Games. He stuck to the leader, P. Sale until the last three miles, and then ran away to win by 100 yards. Sale forced the pace for almost the entire 26 miles and hung on gamely after Baillie made his break. Results:— W. D. Baillie (Lynndale), 2:22:7, 1: P. Sale (Owairaka), 2:22:32, 2; G. Douglas (Manurewa), 2:26:45, 3: J. Atkinson (Manurewa), 2:31:24, 4; K. Stone (Calliope), 2:32:2, 5: I. Craig (Manurewa), 2:33:29, 6; B. Sowden (Manurewa), 2:33:51, 7.
