Girl Beats Drum For Boys’ Brigade

A member of the 20th Christchurch Girls’ Brigade company qualified for the movement’s band badge in an unusual way yesterday morning.

Corporal Margaret Cottle played the side drum in the combined 6th Christchurch23rd Christchurch Boys’ Brigade band which led the 21st anniversary parade, of the 6th Christchurch company to St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church.

The Canterbury-Westland regional commissioner of the Girls’ Brigade (Miss D. Strachan) said yesterday that it was seldom a girl obtained a band badge in New Zealand. Most of the few who have qualified were in pipe bands. There is only one Girls’ Brigade band in New Zealand. In Blenheim. Miss Cottle, who has 13 badges, had completed all her sections for the badge except playing in a band. She has been a member of the Girls’ Brigade for nine years and a half.

Miss Cottle Is also taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and hopes to obtain her bronze award early next year.
