Poor Entries, Good Times

Encouraging times compensated for poor entries In the Canterbury Swiming Centre’s first monthly trial session for middle distance competitors, held at the Wharenui Coronation Pool yesterday. Only six swimmers, all from Wharenui, took part, but one. A. B. Kindred, easily beat the national qualifying time for men’s 1650 yards freestyle. His time was less than 7sec slower than his own provincial record. In the girls* 880 yard race, Catherine Whiting was only one second outside the national women’s target time—an excellent swim for a 12-year-old. Jill Nielson was not far behind her. Results:— Men’s 1650 Yard Freestyle —A. B. Kindred, 18:58.4, 1; D. M. Hindle, 20:6, 2; N. Williams. 20:26, 3. Girls’ 880 Yard Freestyle.—C. J. Whiting, 11:36, 1: J. Nielson. 11:41.3, 2; B. Braithwaite, 12:2 4, 3.
