Sir, —On November 29 “The Press” featured an article written by Dr. W. Ironside and published in the New Zealand Medical Journal. It was headed: “Many Students are Mentally Ill.” Dr. Ironside said: “If the student health service is to deal with all health problems on the campus in New Zealand as in the United States of America and other countries it must be staffed with psychiatrists and clinical psychologists.” A few months ago a student in Texas climbed a tower at the university, taking with him rifles and ammunition. He killed a number of people and wounded others before he was killed himself. He had told his university psychiatrist that he had an urge to slaughter, but the psychiatrist took no action. If the University of Otago acts on the pleading of Dr. Ironside and appoints psychiatrists, one hopes they will not then think it safe to erect a tower.— Yours, etc., SANITY. December 3, 1966,
