Wisdom, ‘Not Monopoly Of Age '

Wisdom was not the monopoly of age and experience, the vice-chancellor of the University of Canterbury (Professor N. C. Phillips) told graduates of the Christchurch Teaates of the Christchurch Teachers’ College. Professor Phillips said in his graduation address that teachers should be activelystirred by a proper discontent. He urged graduates to reject complacency and not to rest on laurels alreadywon-

“The best education is self education, and this implies humility,” he said. Seif-reliance was the best thing teachers could bequeath to their pupils—“and only the best is good enough. “If a teacher accepts less than the best, then he or she is a party to debasement of standards.” he said. “Seek excellence within your means and your pupils will remember you ”

Professor Phillips said that the quick and shoddy would be a temptation during a hard working day but teachers must try to avoid this. Professor Phillips said that the children the graduates would teach would probably live into the last quarter of the twenty-first century when the situation of the present

age would not be relevant. “Attention must be given to the young to make them adaptable and capable of firm convictions,” he said. In an age where news media constantly bombarded people it was hard to distinguish facts because they were often cunningly concealed opinions. “You must think and discriminate wisely,” he told the graduates. The Mayor of Christchurch (Mr G. Manning), in congratulating the graduands, said that teaching was one of the most rewarding professions. “A teacher has the responsibility of the mental, moral and physical well-being of the children in our schools,” said Mr Manning. “This responsibility can also be one of the greatest enjoyments there is in life.”

Other speakers were the principal of the Christchurch Teachers’ College (Mr G. Guy), the president of the North Canterbury branch of the Educational Institute (Mr R. F. Armstrong), the district senior inspector of schools (Mr B- J. Wilson), and the superintendent of education, southern regional office (Mr S. S. P. Hamilton). The chairman was the chairman of the Canterbury Education Board (Mr A. S. Murray).
