13,000 Sq. Yds. of Carpet

In New York’s new £l6 million Metropolitan Opera House, a great expanse of richly-shaded red Woolmark carpet sweeps throughout the building and auditorium—--13,000 square yards. The Metropolitan Opera House is the latest in a complex of modern new cultural buildings at New York’s Lincoln Centre for the performing arts. Starting with the Philharmonic Hall in 1962, all five buildings have pure wool carpeting throughout in some areas, even on the walls. More than one million concert-goers have trodden the Philharmonic building carpet in four years—“and it’s still fine,” says Mrs Edith Queller, who, as interior designer for the architects, has been responsible for the carpeting of the new Opera House.
