BARRIER REEF TOURISTS
(Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.A.) SYDNEY, Nov. 29
Tourist interests this week launched a plan to break down the “barrier” to Queensland’s world-famous Great Barrier Reef. The "barrier” is the difficulty tourists have in actually getting on to the Great Barrier Reef proper to view its superb coral formations, and to see its tropical water life. Because the coral reef makes access by boat so hazardous, very few tourists have seen the delights of the real reef at close quarters. Ansett Transport Industries has made a bid for a disused pontoon bridge across the river Derwent, at Hobart, Tasmania. The company plans to tow the pontoons to Queensland where they would be anchored at choice vantage spots.
Tourists would fly into these reef inspection points by helicopter.
