BRIGHT BATTING IN CUP TRIAL
Three more players with less than a certain chance of selection, staked their claims for a place in the squad in the Brabin Cup cricket trial yesterday.
They were all batsmen: R. E. Gearry, who made a sparkling 67 not out; C. C. McKenzie, with his second 40 of the match; and P. Wall. Gearry had batted promisingly in the first innings without piercing the field and for a short time in his second innings was again hitting to the fieldsmen. However, as his confidence improved, he pounced on loose bowling by I. M. Walter and C. K. Baker with deft footwork and scored his last 50 runs in very quick time. He hit 13 fours for 52 of his runs, and played some glorious leg-side shots. McKenzie’s was a very different innings to that he played on the first day and sternly he set about building a score. For the most part, he eschewed risks and took the runs offered most competently. Earlier, D. W. Stead has batted attractively, with some fine-looking pulls punctuating his innings.
Bowled Too Lor ;, Walter was bowled too long and Baker’s wicket-return was helped by the desire of some of the batsmen to score quickly. However, Walter batted very efficiently in both innings and until A. R. Hounsell came in, was the only first innings batsman to give any impression of security. His running between the wickets with Hounsell, who attacked sensibly, and Wall (in the second innings) were features of the day.
Walter and Wall made a bright start when R. W. Anderson’s XI needed 181 in two hours but thereafter there was resistance only by R. G. Fulton to C. M. Kirk, who was able to turn the ball readily on a dusty pitch. Scores:— R. W. ANDERSON’S XI First Innings (101/3) I. M. Walter, c sub. (Baker), b Kirk .. 65 D. Galway, b Gaunson . 5 A. E.
