Blood Tests For Drivers

Sir,—The chairman of the Lower Hutt traffic committee is “beginning to think the drinking driver is sacrosanct.” The Minister of Transport (Mr McAlpine) is “deeply conscious of the part played by alcohol in road accidents,”

but insists that blood tests would not help: “blood testing proved nothing except that some alcohol had been consumed.” He wants to leave it at that. Years ago a Minister of Transport (Mr Semple) said: “The drinking driver has got to go ... he is not going to be allowed to kill people on the roads.” That sounded hopeful, but, man of action though he was, he did not see it through. The present Minister should have our sympathy. He can only express concern that he is under criticism, and silently acknowledge his helplessness.—Yours, etc., H. G. BROWN. November 30, 1966.

Professor A. M. Kennedy, professor of chemical engineering at the University of Canterbury, has been appointed to the management committee of the New Zealand Fertiliser Manufacturers’ Research Association.
