Deep Cove Men Set Another Record
(New Zealand Press Association)
INVERCARGILL, November 28.
Deep Cove tunnellers pushed the Manapouri tailrace tunnel ahead 251 feet last week, beating their record set the week before by 35 feet.
As a result, the underground men earned themselves their biggest week’s bonus—just over £lB—with proportionate shares for men employed elsewhere on the contract.
Good rock lies ahead, and it is expected that the rate of progress over recent weeks will be maintained and improved. Reports from Deep Cove indicate that the progress through good rock is providing a heartening change after months of slogging for little result through soft rock and millions of gallons of water. Footage tallies for the week
were: Monday, 36ft: Tuesday, 46ft; Wednesday, 44ft; Thursday, 33ft; Friday, 47ft; Saturday 45ft.
