Rapid Development At Bishopdale
The rapid development of the Bishopdale chopping centre had meant that only two of the -ji commercial sites available were not taken up, said the president of the Bishopdale Businessmen’s Association (Mr K. G. Daldorf) yesterday.
"Thirty premises are occupied. and of the seven sites ’eft. five have been taken up.” he said. “Two large sites remain to be allocated, and there have been inquiries for them." It was indicative of the: growth of Bishopdale. Mr Daldorf said, that four banks now had branches there, that a doctor had a surgery, with a dentist coming in January and a second chemist's shop due to be opened. The post office was doing > far better business than had j
been expected when it opened at the end of July, and an electrical appliance firm had shown its confidence by moving from the city to Bishopdale. “The growth of business has j far exceeded the expectations, of the shopkeepers,” he said. It was pleasing that the Waimairi County Council had built public lavatories as the : first stage of developing a community centre, and Bishopdale awaited with interest the Licensing Commission’s decision on a tavern licence, for which there were three applicants. Mr Daldorf said that apart from patronage from the growing residential suburbs nearby. Bishopdale attracted customers from a wide area. It had the largest car-parks in Christchurch, with room for 654 cars, and plans, in later development, for 1100 spaces.
