TOO SMART FOR POLICE
Dobermans To Go
(N .Z .P. A.-Reuter—Copyright)
LONDON, Nov. 28.
Britain’s police have decided to stop using Doberman Pinschers, the fierce-looking German guard dogs, for police work.
After using Dobermans experimentally on police work with several British police forces, they said today it was found the dogs were too smart.
One dog handler commented: “An Alsatian will go for an armed man if I tell him to, but a Doberman is likely to spot the gun and potential danger and just sit down.”
The Lancashire Police Force, which has used dogs since 1936, has disposed of its Dobermans.
Frank Pettit, superintendent of the National Canine Defence League kennels at Watford, near London, said the trouble with the Doberman was that it was so intelligent that it was one step ahead of the policeman handling it “This dog thinks faster than any other breed and acts almost instantaneously,” he said. “It needs a really expert handler.”
