SOCIAL SERVICES £103,000 Spent By Anglican Diocese
A total of £103,000 had been spent by the Social Service Council of the Diocese of Christchurch over the last year, the diocesan registrar (Mr J. C. Cottrell) told the annual meeting of the council.
The figure covered all work carried out by the council, excluding capital costs. According to the annual report, 57 children had been under the council’s care during the year—either in foster homes, or one of the three family cottage homes it runs. Mr Cottrell said the cost of maintaining each child was approximately £6 3s 4d a week.
The report says that 90 young people are being accommodated in three hostels run by the council. This includes Maori youths training as carpentery apprentices. The provision of a new hospice for the aged is under consideration. During the year 100 applications for places in homes for the aged, and 28 for the hospice were received. Only 40 could be admitted.
The council helped 20 unmarried mothers during the
year and social workers advised or otherwise assisted 750 others.
“Conjoint family counselling” is a new departure for the council and involves the counselling of members of families together.
