Sailor’s Flight Best At Wingatui

Sailor’s Flight, a form candidate for the Wood Memorial Handicap, the hack sprint at Beaumont on Saturday, was the most impressive trialist at Wingatui yesterday when gallops were held on an excellent track. Other horses engaged at the Beaumont meeting to attract attention were Lisa, Blue Rose, Sandy Man, The Greatest, Tarcass, Queen Neptune, Night Bell and Cognac. The trials were held by the Otago Racing Owners’, Breeders’ and Trainers’ Association in conjunction with the Dunedin Jockey Club. The trestles were about 20 feet out on the course proper. Sailor’s Flight (R. N. Marsh) recorded the fastest time over five furlongs when she ran two lengths clear of the last-start winner, The Greatest (P. J. Silver). with Blue Girl (R. McAra) a head away third. She ran the distance in Imin 4sec, the first two furlongs in 25 4-ssec. Tarcass (J. D. Pankhurst) and Queen Neptune (L. W. Hare), two recent winners, shared the honours in the first division when they came home in Imin 5 4-ssec. There was little pace early, the first two furlongs taking 27sec. Lisa (D. Imin 4 3-ssec, after taking 27sec for the first two furlongs. Sandy Man (S. Ryder) led all the way in the hack trial over seven furlongs in Imin 33 4-ssec.

Mr P. J. Hefferman’s Someo gelding ran out the distance strongly to hold Monade by a head and cover the last three furlongs in 40 2-ssec. Cognac, Dime and Deep Cove were the respective winners of the three divisions of the fivefurlong sprint for hacks. Cognac recorded the fastest time in Imin 5 l-ssec, the first two furlongs in 26 3-ssec.
