Guinness To Brew In Auckland

WELLINGTON, November 29.

Arthur Guinness, New Zealand, Ltd,, as a result of a recent survey, has decided to brew in Auckland. The change will probably take place in the second half of next year.

Mr R. R. Martin, the firm’s marketing director, said the decision had been made after a recent visit by Mr F. P. Clift, managing-director of Guinness Overseas. Ltd.

"Since April, 1964, Guinness extra stout has been brewed by the Tui Brewery Ltd., for Arthur Guinness Son and Company Ltd., who have been responsible for the marketing nf the product,” said Mr Martin.

“They have been fully satisfied with the quality of the Guinness produced, which has amply justified the confidence they place in the Tui Brewery", but a recent survey of the distribution pattern has shown that it would be more logical to brew in Auckland.

“For this reason it has been decided to move the source

of production from Mangatainoka to Auckland where Guinness will be brewed by New Zealand Breweries Ltd., starting at a date yet to be decided, probably during the second half of 1967. “The marketing will continue to be in the hands of Guinness, through their marketing company, Arthur Guinness New Zealand, Ltd.”

The chairman of directors of Tui Brewery (Mr R. Martin) said the change would not seriously affect the company’s profits, although his company would be sorry to lose the prestige value of the connexion with Guinness. In the last year’s trading Guinness represented only 4.01 per cent of Tui’s sales volume and a less percentage of its tax-paid profits, he said.
