Amateur Rockets
A rocket five feet long that is designed to reach a height of 2000 feet will be launched by the Otematata Amateur Rocket Society during the next few weeks. Last week, the society successfully launched its first model, a 12in rocket.
The i-inch diameter rocket, which had a steel case and wooden nose cone, reached an altitude of about 200 feet and travelled 240 feet horizontally. Propellant was an 85 per cent to 15 per cent mixture of zinc and sulphur powders. It was electrically ignited. The society, which is sponsored by the Otematata District High School, includes T. Grimwood, K. Sullivan, R. Grant, H. Willoughby, and B. Laing. The school science master, Mr A. Familton, supervises the group’s activities.
