Plea For A Tree

Sir, —It is with concern that I read of the sale Of the motor camp in Yaldhurst road, not because of the loss of the camp but of the likely loss of the large eucalyptus trees on the property. There must be many people like myself who regard this tree as a welcome landmark and would seek its preservation. Would it be possible for the section containing the tree to be bought and used as a public reserve or park by the Waimairi County Council? It seems unlikely that a private section owner would be public spirited enough to have it towering over his new house.—Yours, M. C. CULLEN, November 12, 1966. [Mr R. A. Anderson, secretary of Abbotts Park Estates, Limited, replies: “The development company is anxious to preserve the park-like appearance of the area and will as far as practicable preserve the fine trees on the property. The large eucalyptus tree, along with some other handsome trees on the frontage, are included in a strip of land which must be dedicated for road widening as a condition pre-requisite to the subdivision. It will then fall within the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Works, or perhaps more correctly the National Roads Board, and representations will be made to them for permission to retain such trees as ought to be preserved. As they will not interfere with visibility and are an ornament to the highway it r is hoped that the board will' be sympathetic.”]
