Matahina Diversion Tunnel Closed
(New Zealand Press Association* ROTORUA. November 25. The £l5 million Matahina power project is again ahead of schedule after a diversion tunnel on the Rangitaiki river was closed this morning and the hydro lake began to form behind the dam.
The project at Te Mahoe, in Bay of Plenty, is expected to feed 70,000 kilowatts of electricity into the national grid before April next year. There was a hitch on October 27, when concrete stop logs failed to seal properly in the tunnel slot, but this morning 160 tons of logs were dropped in pairs to combat the swift river flow
and the job took less than an hour.
The river flow quickly slowed to a dribble downstream of the dam and Te Mahoe residents and workmen were out in force looking for trout. The lake is slowly rising at the dam site and is expected to reach the dewatering tunned level, 50ft above the diversion tunnel, within the next 24 hours.
