NEWSPAPER CANOES
Carves trade of newspaper will jee on the Avon river from ihe Brighton bridge to the tiwer bridge when the Kowhi scout district holds its race on Saturday. Sects in the district are build g canoes by pasting layer of newspaper on to a woodi frame and painting the p >ier mache effect with varnii. Thetanoe frame was lashed by scat methods, similar to the wv the islanders build their Ames. The scouts were not ptmitted to use glue, nails p screws, but drills could > used. The knoe frame was placed upie down and two or three kyers of newspaper were toroughly soaked in water lefore being joined with nil paper paste to the frame. *his process was repeated several times when the preious layers were dry. Four intries have been received. These include the New Bighton Bishop scout Troop, he Pegasus Sea Scout Troop fir South Brighton, the North ftach Scout Group and the Arliui Scout Troop. The Assistant district commissionlr of the Kowhai Scout Iratrict (Mr R. Andrews) sad he had got the idea frort an Australian magazine artrle. This year the canoe wi replacing the usual raft race. The rate is about a mile.
