NO NEW BY-LAWS ON DOGS

Greater control over the keeping- of dogs was sought in a petition discussed by the City Council on Monday evening. The petition, from Mrs S. H. Tisch, and 66 others, mainly Sumner and Redcliffs residents, asked the council to consider new by-laws. The petitioners asked that dogs should be barred from beaches, barking dogs which disturbed residents should be removed or destroyed, all boarding kennels should be outside city limits, breeding should be permitted only outside city limits, roaming dogs should be impounded and the owners fined or the dogs destroyed if unclaimed within seven days, and that licence fees be increased. The council was not disposed to increase dog registration fees at present, the

by-laws committee said. Any unregistered dogs would be dealt with whenever they were notified, and any owner who allowed a dog to offend against the Dog Registration Act or the by-laws would be prosecuted if the parties concerned were prepared to give evidence. Noise from barking dogs was a matter for civil action.

The siting of boarding kennels and the area in which breeding should be permitted were referred to the townplanning committee.
