MAGISTRATES COURT Man Committed For Trial On Charge Of Forgery

Anzac Robert Williams, aged 22, a wool store labourer, was committed for trial in the Supreme Court on a charge of forgery after depositions had been taken in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday before Messrs P. A. Le Brun and J. T. Bisman, Justices of the Peace. Williams, who was represented by Mr D. H. Stringer, pleaded not guilty. Miles James Thomas Auton, the manager of the Linwood branch of the Canterbury Savings Bank, said that Williams came into the bank on October 4 and presented a withdrawal slip for £34, which was cashed. Auton said that Williams had produced a Hornby branch passbook, and filled in a special signature card, signing it “M. Knox.” Michael Knox, of Lower Hutt, said that when he was living in Christchurch, he had opened an account at the Hornby branch of the Canterbury Savings Bank on June 17 and deposited, he thought, £4O.

Withdrawals and deposits were made from time to time. On October 12, Knox said, he went to the bank to withdraw £2O, but there was only £1 10s left in credit. His bank book plus a form containing his signature were missing from his home in Sherboume street. “The teller showed me a withdrawal slip for £34 with what was supposed to be my signature. The teller said it had been withdrawn from the Lin Wood branch,” said Knox. “I did not make out the withdrawal slip, and no person had authority to make out the slip.” Mr Stringer did not make any submissions. Bail was allowed. BURGLARY CHARGE Murphy Komene Cassidy, aged 24, a truck driver, was committed to the Supreme Court for trial on two charges of car conversion and one of burglary. Cassidy was represented by Mr R. J. Allan. A driver employed by Farrier Waimak, Ltd., Bruce Bull, said he had taken a company runabout van to his home in Sherbourne street on the evening of October 10. It had gone in the morning. lan Gavin Smith, the proprietor of Smith’s garage in Springs road, Prebbleton, said he went to work at 6.30 a.m. on October 11, and found that someone had gained entry to the premises by breaking a window. A 1965 model car bad gone and the doors of the garage were wide open. Detective-Constable William Patrick Creasy said that on October 12 he had interviewed Cassidy who made a statement admitting the offences. Cassidy said in the statement that he was accompanied by a friend, but declined to name him.
