BYERS UNDER THREAT

"The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON.

The New Zealand cycling team captain and dual Commonwealth Games medallist, L. J. Byers, came very close to suspension for being the only Jamaican games rider not to have furnished a report on his trip, at a meeting of the national cycling association.

The secretary, Mr V. R. Ross, pointed out that the

association could come in for considerable adverse publicity should it place a suspension on Byers “who has done sb much for our sport over recent years.” But Mr Cuff pointed out that the council would be failing in its duty if it rescinded the motion passed at the previous meeting, that riders who had not reported within 14 days would be suspended. “Byers has done a lot for New Zealand,” said Mr Cuff,

“but this association has done a great deal for Byers. “I have had my ups and downs with Mr Byers but I regard him as a scholar and a gentleman. However, we can’t have one rule for him and one rule for other riders.” But it was then revealed that the secretary had not advised Byers of his obligations in writing and the council agreed it could take no action until this had been done.
