Jeffery’s Fast Sprint Narrowly Fails

A mighty final lap by the New Zealand cash sprint champion, K. R. Jeffery, which narrowly failed to bring him victory, was a thrilling climax to the track cycling meeting at English Park last evening.

In the three-mile (12 laps) scratch event, M. Woolford broke away with half a minute to go and opened a lead of more than 50 yards. At the bell, he was still well ahead, and Jeffery, with G. O. Moore and J. R. Williams on his wheel, made his great bid to catch Woolford. He did so, in the straight, but Williams came around the outside to snatch the win.

The first ride on the track this season by T. J. Tabak added spice to the amateur flve-mlle scratch race.

Tabak shot into a lead from the start and throughout the race tired the field as he forced it to chase tris breakaways. What appeared to be the decisive break was made by Tabak and J. H. Cleary with three laps to go. However, with Cleary both reluctant and unable to take a lap. they were caught at the bell and there was a sprint finish. C. B. Fitzgerald led out. unusually for him. and held off the challenges of R. D. Mann and M. W. Lltolff.

The first glimpses of form by A. O'Hagan were shown In a four-lap (approximately a mile) handicap cash race. With three laps to go. O'Hagan regained a tremendous amount of ground in a bid to catch the front riders, only to be beaten by G. Wallaee. Results:— AMATEUR Scratch. —A grade quarter, mile: C. B. Fitzgerald 1, M W.
