Haiphong Attack

American planes yesterday struck within five miles of the heart of Haiphong to blast the port’s surface-to-air missile storage depot.

An American military spokesman said today that in two raids Skyhawk and supersonic Phantom fighter bombers from aircraft-carriers in I the Gulf of Tonkin destroyed at least half the S.A.M. support area with their 5001 b bombs. He said the bomber pilots j reported touching off several j large explosions and fires. A S.A.M. support depot would probably contain stored missiles, extra equipment and fuel.
