By-election
A by-election will be necessary to fill the Heathcote County Council vacancy caused by the death of a Cashmere riding member, Mr L. L. Smith. The County Clerk (Mr J. A. Geard) said yesterday that it was likely the election would be held at the end of January or in the first week
of February. The Local Elections and Polls Act provides I that, if an extraordinary vacancy occurs between November 8 and December 27, the poll can be defered for 35 to j 42 days after December 27, to i avoid the holiday period. I
