SUMNER LIBRARY

N.Z. Section Considered

“I doubt if there is a poet in New Zealand worthy of the name,” said the president (Mr E. Huston) at the annual meeting of the Sumner Public Library. Mr Huston was replying to a motion put by Mr P. Huston that there be a section in the library devoted to books written by New Zealanders. Mr P. Huston said there should be some encouragement to New Zealand authors and the library could help by setting aside a special section. New Zealand poets and novelists would become better known.

“Are there any poets in New Zealand whose works are worth buying?” asked Mr E. Huston. “Should we encourage poetry in the library? After all many of the ills in the world can be attributed to poets.” Mrs F. Meyers said Professor Arnold Wall was a noteable New Zealand poet. “But he is dead,” a member said. Mrs H. Andrew said there was a book of poetry by Professor Wall in the library. Mr D. Bennett said there were anthologies worth buying with the works of New Zealand There was a section in the library on New Zealand, but it was mainly historical said Mrs I. M. Quilter.

Members decided to leave the question of a special New Zealand section for New Zealand authors to the incoming committee.
