COMPUTER HIRE PLAN
Hospital Board In Auckland (N.Z. Preti Auociation) AUCKLAND, Nov. 21. An Auckland Hospital Board plan to hire electronic data-processing equipment for administrative and technical purposes has been approved in principle by the Treasury. The lease of the equipment, which will cost the board £18,405 a year, plus establishment costs of £13,320, was hailed by the chairman of the board (Mr T. H. C. Caughey) tonight as a milestone in the administration of the board. The board believes that preparation of the payroll for a total staff of more than 10,000 by 1970 and the demands of the pathological laboratories, processing more than 10,000 tests annually will require greater use of automated equipment if adequate standards of service are to be maintained. Health Department officers consider that eventually there will be need for development of hospital computer services on a national basis, and that the Auckland board's computer system should be regarded as the nucleus for such a scheme.
