College And D.S.I.R. Research Contract

A two-year contract between the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research and Lincoln College, under which field and laboratory studies of diseases and pests leading to deterioration in South Island lucerne stands will be made by the college under the supervision of Dr. I. D. Blair, reader in microbiology, has been approved by the Minister of Science (Mr Taiboys). The contract has been arranged under a scheme approved by the Government five years ago which allows departments to make research contracts with universities to undertake specific projects. The contract with Lincoln provides for the college to furnish glasshouse and laboratory facilities and the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research to meet

transport, field survey assistance and other administrative expenses estimated at £570 a year for two years. Lucerne has major potential value in parts of the South Island, especially in such low rainfall areas as the Mackenzie basin, where the establishment and management of normal pastures are difficult.

Although in such areas lucerne may establish satisfactorily, stands tend to deteriorate rapidly and to need renewal.

Diseases and pests are considered to be the prime cause of this deterioration, although other factors may well be involved says the department.
