TROTTING Timid Wins Soundly At Methven Trials

Timid, a candidate for the New Zealand Golden Slipper Stakes at Waimate on December 10, attracted attention when she won her heat of the two-year-old parade at yesterday’s trials held at Methven.

There were three heats for young horses and they acquitted themselves well. The trials were held in cold, showery weather, with the track on the dead side. Timid, a filly by Garrison Hanover from Shy in G. Holmes’s team, led all the way in the first heat. She was accompanied by Special Form (Garrison Hanover-Bonnie Doone) in the middle stages, but came away again in the straight and wop by half a length. The field started about 40 yards behind the sixfurlong post. They took lmin 41 l-ssec for the six furlongs, the last half-mile in lmin Bsec, a good run in the conditions. A gelding by Robert Dillon from Modern Smile in J. L. Ferguson’s team, was in second place for most of the way and did well to run Timid to half a length. Spandau (King Creed-Daisy Gold) was close up all the way and was half a length back third, a head in front of Ascot King (Deep Adios-Luronne). Ascot King was fifth early and came home fairly well. He, too, is in at Waimate. Leading Light (Local LightRose Tattoo) was a fair fifth, ahead of Fratello (ForwardWee Doll). Imperial Way showed speed to win the second heat in

lmin 43sec, the last half-mile in lmin 7sec. He was first out, but was steadied behind Francis Joseph after less than a furlong. Imperial Way (RaceaboutImperial Purple) ran on best to win by a length from Starglo (Thurber Frost-Arania), which shaped pleasingly. Wee Buttons (Flying SongRowan Star) was a fair third four lengths back, followed by Francis Joseph, Johnny Special and a Garrison Han-over-Maid Myra colt. Amber King (Deep AdiosArdmore) won the third heat in lmin 41 4-ssec, the last half-mile in lmin 8 l-ssec. Amber King held off a strong finisher in Shepherds Delight (Chief Rainbow-Riviera) by a neck, with a length and a half to Five Pennies (King CreedApril Hall). Khandallah (Garrison Hanover-Marqui-site) was a fair fourth, ahead of Forward Star (For-ward-Empire Lady). In Cup Co Pilot recorded a sound trial for the Geraldine Cup when he finished third behind Bill Adonis and Courtier in the first heat of the free-for-all. Courtier and Bill Adonis both pulled hard in the middle stages, with Courtier leading over the last mile. Bill Adonis finished on slightly the better and won by a head in 3min 45 2-ssec for the 13 furlongs, the last half-mile in lmin 5 3-ssec. Co Pilot, after being towards the rear early, joined the leaders at the furlong. He was allowed to ease up near the post and was two lengths back third. He looks in great heart for his engagement in the Geraldine Cup. Winfield Chief paced a fair race for fourth. He is one of the backmarkers on 36 yards in the Geraldine Cup. Ingleburn made up ground for fifth, ahead of Frugal and Shy Bess, with Cindy at the rear. Barbuda, a stablemate of Co Pilot, finished best in the second heat and won by a head from another slow beginner in Gay Return. Both horses look in good order. Barbuda paced the 13 furlongs in 3min 48 3-ssec, the last half-mile in lmin 6 3-ssec. It was a sound run by a horse in his class.

Linkwood Lady finished on fairly well for third, but was five lengths behind Gay Return, with Lucky Tryax a fair

fourth, ahead of Moneywise and Overluck. Stakes Candidate Corwar confirmed her position as early favourite for the Orari Challenge Stakes next Tuesday when she won the 2:19 class pace. She raced outside Marania in second place for most of the way and took charge early in the run home. She did not have to be driven out to win by a length from El Caballos, which started from 36 yards. She paced the 13 furlongs in 3min 54 4-ssec, the last half mile in lmin Bsec. Corwar has drawn badly at Orari, but that should not stop her racing prominently. She will then race next in the New Zealand Oaks on Saturday week. Queen Gipsy paced a fair race for third, ahead of Marania, with Lucrative making up ground for fifth, ahead of Finesse and Loyal Tryax. Glen Bell, a candidate for the Rangitata Handicap at Orari next Tuesday, gained a handy win in the first heat of the 2:20 class trot. The pace was slow and the winner took 4min 3 l-ssec for the 13 furlongs, the last half-mile in lmin 10 4-ssec. Borderman trotted a fair race for second, ahead of Black Frost, Promite and Melinda.

Royal Court won the second heat in 3min 55 2-ssec, the last half-mile in lmin 10 l-ssec. Norwood Lass trotted a sound race from 60 yards to finish second, a length in front of Smokey Dillon, which began from 72 yards. Lachaber was right up fourth, ahead of Fair Play and Rapparee. None of the runners in the five qualifying heats recorded the required 3:28. The closest to this time was 3min 29 3-ssec returned by Pacing Simba in the fourth heat. His performance was good as he was slow away. Somerset won the first heat of the 2:20 class pace by four lengths from Gay Light, with Falincia and Los Altos next. The winner took 3min 51 4-5 sec for the 13 furlongs, the last half-mile in lmin 8 3-ssec. Lee gained a decisive win in the second heat in 3min 48 l-ssec, the last half-mile in lmin 8 l-ssec. Newlands was a sound second, ahead of Caviare, Limelight and Annfield.
