Skelton To Ride Star Belle In Guineas

AUCKLAND. The Takanini jockey, R. J. Skelton, has elected to ride Star Belle rather than Foxvale in the Waikato Guineas at Te Rapa on Friday. Skelton has been Star Belle’s regular rider in her last five starts, four of which she has won. As well Skelton rode Foxvale when he finished an unlucky third in the New Zealand Derby at Riccarton at his last start. Yesterday at Takanini on the No. 3 grass about 10 feet out Star Belle, ridden by Skelton,
ran six furlongs with another Guineas candidate, Great Summit (Wyatt) in Imin 22sec, the last half-mile in 54 3-ssec and the last three furlongs in 40 3-ssec. At the finish Star Belle was galloping strongly and well in hand.
Star Belie has thrived since easily taking the New Zealand Oaks and her clash with Barellan is arousing great interest. Del Charro (Hughes), a candidate for the Guineas, ran an easy six furlongs, accelerating over the last three in 37 2-ssec, a most impressive gallop. He has not the same recent form as Star Belle and Barellan, but looks ready for a testing mile and a quarter. He will be ridden by G. F. Hughes. Foxvale, ridden by Skelton, was given pacework. He looks to have done well since his Riccarton trip.
